Irritability whether you know it or someone informs you (like your spouse), is another common but abnormal symptom of PMS. This is most often due to a sugar handling problem and/or hormonal issue primarily with the thyroid. The thyroid makes the hormone T4, that must be converted to T3 in the liver, kidneys and intestines. Insulin, cortisol and estrogen are the three major hormones that block the T4 to T3 conversion, so you end up with a low thyroid and mood issues. A diet high in carbohydrates (especially refined), caffeine and a stressful lifestyle will throw off serum and cellular glucose levels resulting in mood swings. Cutting out the caffeine, reducing stress, increasing protein, increasing Omega 3 and 6 fats and decreasing or eliminating refined carbohydrates such as sugars and flours will often times fix this problem.
