Cracking of the heels is often a sign of low thyroid function. (See more information in this section with the thinning hair signs.) Cracking of the heels can also be due to an essential fatty acid imbalance. That occurs when there is a lack of Omega 3 fats from fish and flax oils. Other times, there is a lack of Omega 6 fats from vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds. The deficiency of the Omega 3 fats in many diets, as well as diets that contain hydrogenated fats, lead to a fat imbalance which in turn leads to the skin and hair losing its luster, hydration and tone.
